"Picture of Stylish Cherry-Blossom Viewing at Kibun Koganei" (1860) depicts the fashionable custom of hanami—cherry blossom viewing—at the riverside cherry trees of Koganei in western Edo, one of the most celebrated blossom-viewing spots accessible to ordinary city dwellers. Produced when Yoshitoshi was just twenty-one, this early print shows him working within the established conventions of seasonal celebration prints while already demonstrating skill at capturing the festive atmosphere of outdoor gatherings. Koganei's blossom-lined riverbanks drew thousands of visitors each spring.
