"Preparatory Drawing of High Priest Kōmyō" (1874) is an ink-and-color study of a Buddhist prelate—possibly Kōmyō Shōnin, founder of the Jōdoshū (Pure Land) sect, or another eminent monk of the same name. The drawing preserves the compositional arrangement of robes, ritual implements, and bearing before woodblock transfer. Yoshitoshi's treatment of Buddhist religious figures required careful attention to iconographic convention while still achieving the psychological presence he brought to all his figure studies.
