"Saigo Takamori with his Dog" (1888) presents the legend of the Meiji era's greatest tragic hero in an intimate domestic guise: the warrior-statesman who led the Satsuma Rebellion is shown not in battle but in quiet companionship with his beloved hunting dogs. Saigo had died in the rebellion's final defeat in 1877, but his reputation had been rehabilitated by the late 1880s, and he had become an object of popular veneration as the last embodiment of samurai spirit. The dog imagery emphasizes his loyalty and his love of the hunt.
