"The Moon over Gojō Bridge" (Gojō no tsuki, 1867) from the series "Heroes for the Snow, Moon, and Flowers" depicts the legendary confrontation between the young Ushiwakamaru and the warrior-monk Benkei on the famous bridge in Kyoto, rendered in a moonlit night scene of extraordinary atmosphere. Benkei had been collecting swords from defeated opponents until Ushiwakamaru defeated him with supernatural agility, leaping and dancing around the massive monk's attacks. The [diptych](/glossary/diptych) format spreads the composition across two sheets, the Gojō Bridge's iconic wooden structure spanning both panels under the cold moon.
