"The Two Brave Men Inuzuka Shino and Inugai Genpachi Battling on the Roof of Horyukaku" (September 1887) is a [diptych](/glossary/diptych) depicting the climactic rooftop battle from Takizawa Bakin's epic novel "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden," in which the two sworn brothers among the eight dog warriors fight a desperate battle on the roof of a famous lacquered tower. The diptych format allows Yoshitoshi to spread the kinetic combat across two sheets, the ornate architecture of the Horyukaku providing a visually spectacular backdrop for the two heroes' ferocious engagement.
