Description
A close-up half-length portrait of a kabuki actor in the role of a warrior, set against a solid dark indigo background. He wears a wide gray-brimmed black lacquered hat over a wild gray-streaked black wig, with a fierce scowling expression rendered in the bold angular lines and white-and-red kumadori makeup of the aragoto style. His armored costume combines teal-and-gold lamellar plates, a red under-robe, and a dark blue kimono with a white floral and scrollwork pattern; his right hand grips the cord at his chest while his left hand and part of a striped fur or feather mantle are visible at lower right. Vertical cartouches of text occupy the upper corners, framed by this 1865 print's dark palette of indigo, red, teal, and gold.
