$5,000–$200,000+. Reproduction prints: $5,000–$15,000. Key value factors: Shoen's paintings are far more valuable than prints. Authenticity and provenance are critical.
This print appears to be a portrait of or tribute to Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), the towering figure of Kyoto nihonga painting who was Shoen's most important teacher and mentor. Seiho transformed Kyoto's painting establishment by incorporating Western observational techniques while maintaining Japanese materials and formats, and his influence on Shoen was foundational. If this print depicts Seiho himself, it represents a rare subject for Shoen, who almost exclusively portrayed women. The teacher-student relationship between Seiho and Shoen was one of the most important in modern Japanese art history: he recognized her talent early, supported her career when institutional barriers limited women's participation, and provided the technical training that underpinned her mature style. This print, whatever its specific content, acknowledges that debt through the act of depicting the mentor figure.
Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) was created by Uemura Shoen (上村松園).
