Description
January — the year's first month — is here made into a woodblock print subject in itself, the season's spare quality rendered through Hiratsuka's direct carving. Whether this is a New Year's greeting print or a more abstract meditation on the month's character is left open by the title's brevity. The print evokes winter's reduction: bare forms, minimal color, the year beginning fresh.
