Lake Aoki in Nagano Prefecture, a deep volcanic lake in the Azumino valley, is rendered in Hiratsuka's early woodcut style. The 1927 print captures the lake's still surface against the encircling mountains — a compositional arrangement he would use repeatedly in landscape subjects throughout his career. The lake's clarity and cold depth are conveyed through his spare, direct carving.
