The Byōdō-in at Uji — a Heian-period temple built in 1052 and one of Japan's most celebrated architectural masterpieces — is here viewed from across its reflecting pond, the Phoenix Hall's image doubled in the water. Hiratsuka's woodblock captures the lakeside setting that makes the Byōdō-in unique among Japanese temple complexes, the building appearing to float between sky and its own reflection.
