Lindenberries — the fruit of the bodhi tree (bodaiju), under which the Buddha achieved enlightenment — are rendered in Hiratsuka's 1963 woodblock with the direct naturalism of his botanical subjects. The Japanese title (Bodaiju no mi) gives the subject its Buddhist dimension, the berries' ordinary roundness carrying an extraordinary charge of meaning.
