Mt. Aso in central Kyushu is one of the world's largest active volcanic calderas, its smoking peaks rising above a vast grassy plain. Hiratsuka's 1935 color woodblock renders the volcanic landscape with unusual atmospheric warmth, the mountain's characteristic flat-topped profile emerging above the Aso valley. The color treatment — rare in his output — suggests his engagement with the landscape's chromatic drama.
