Okutama — the valley at the far western reach of Tokyo Prefecture, where the Tama River descends from the mountains — is rendered here in autumn color, the forested ridges turning gold and red above the river gorge. Hiratsuka's 1927 color woodblock captures the season's chromatic drama with a richness unusual in his palette. The Japanese title (Okutama shukei) means "autumn scenery of Okutama."
