The Saruhashi — "Monkey Bridge" — in Kai Province (modern Yamanashi Prefecture) is one of Japan's three famous bridges, a traditional wooden arch spanning the Katsuragawa gorge. Hiratsuka's undated woodblock renders the bridge's single wooden span against the gorge's rocky walls, the bridge's precarious engineering given permanence through his direct carving.
