Description
"Tranquility" — the title itself a state of being rather than a place or object — invites speculation about what image Hiratsuka chose to embody this quality. The undated woodblock may depict a still water surface, an empty garden, or a figure in repose — subjects through which he explored quietude. The title's abstractness is itself unusual in his characteristically documentary approach.
