The lakeshore at Matsue — the city of Hiratsuka's birth, set between Lake Shinji and the Nakaumi lagoon on the Shimane coast — is rendered here in 1969 with the directness of a subject revisited after decades. The view across the lake captures the particular flat light of the San'in coast, where overcast skies diffuse brightness into a soft grey luminosity.
