From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), a 118-print series of vertical oban landscapes and genre scenes that defined the visual image of Edo for generations. A complete set sold for $405,400 at Sotheby's Online Jul 2024.
Saruwaka-cho, in the Asakusa district of Edo, was the theater street where three of the city's licensed kabuki theaters — the Nakamuraza, Ichimuraza, and Moritaza — clustered together. This numbered view captures the lively street scene of the theater district, with playbill posters, vendors, and crowds gathered outside the playhouses in the heart of popular Edo entertainment life.
