From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), a 118-print series of vertical oban landscapes and genre scenes that defined the visual image of Edo for generations. A complete set sold for $405,400 at Sotheby's Online Jul 2024.
Asakusa, home to the great Sensoji temple and the adjacent Nakamise shopping street, was the most popular district in Edo for both religious pilgrimage and popular entertainment. This numbered view likely shows the temple approach with its imposing Kaminarimon gate, the street alive with vendors, pilgrims, and sightseers making their way toward the main hall.
