Fukagawa Hachiman — the Tomioka Hachimangu shrine in the Fukagawa district east of the Sumida River — was one of Edo's most important shrines and the traditional venue for grand sumo tournaments. Its spacious grounds, accessible by ferry across the river, made it a major gathering place for Edo residents. This numbered view captures the shrine or its surrounding waterfront neighborhood.
