

From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), a 118-print series of vertical oban landscapes and genre scenes that defined the visual image of Edo for generations. A complete set sold for $405,400 at Sotheby's Online Jul 2024.
Gotenyama — "Palace Mountain" — was a low hill in Shinagawa overlooking Edo Bay, planted with cherry trees in the early Edo period at the command of the third shogun Iemitsu. It became one of the premier blossom-viewing sites south of the city. This numbered Edo view likely shows the hill during cherry blossom season, its slopes covered with flowering trees and the bay glinting in the distance below.
