Description
Lingering Snow on Mount Hira (Hira no bosetsu) is an early Edo ukiyo-e landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dating to around 1829 and held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The composition belongs to the series Eight Views of Omi Province (Omi hakkei no uchi), Hiroshige's adaptation of a classical Chinese poetic theme to the celebrated scenery surrounding Lake Biwa. In this design, the snow-capped ridges of Mount Hira rise behind the western shore of the lake, their white slopes contrasting against subtly graded indigo skies and the calm expanse of water below. Travelers, fishermen, and small boats animate the foreground without competing with the scale of the mountain, anchoring the landscape print in the everyday life of Omi Province while emphasizing the meditative quiet of late winter. Hiroshige's handling of bokashi gradation in the sky and water reveals his early mastery of atmospheric perspective, a defining feature of his approach to landscape composition that would soon reshape Edo ukiyo-e printmaking. The Eight Views of Omi format, drawn from the Chinese Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang, allowed Hiroshige to pair each location with a specific atmospheric condition such as evening bell, autumn moon, or, here, lingering snow, building a layered emotional reading of place. Collectors and scholars consult the Art Institute of Chicago's documentation for this Utagawa Hiroshige work as part of broader study of Omi hakkei prints, which were widely imitated and reissued throughout the late Edo period. The print remains an important reference for understanding Hiroshige's transition from earlier figural and bijin work toward the meisho-e landscape genre that would culminate in his Tokaido and Edo series. Its restrained palette, asymmetric balance, and seasonal mood make Lingering Snow on Mount Hira an exemplary Edo ukiyo-e landscape print and a foundational image within Hiroshige's career-long engagement with famous Japanese views.
