Description
Mishima, the twelfth post station on the Tokaido, lay at the base of the Hakone mountains in Izu Province and was associated with Mishima Taisha grand shrine and with dense morning mist gathering along its rivers. This print from Hiroshige's 'Reisho Tokaido' edition—named for the formal reisho (clerical script) style of its title cartouches—depicts the station likely at dawn, low mist obscuring the middle ground while the silhouette of Fuji or the Hakone peaks emerges above. Figures of travelers beginning the day's journey provide human scale without dominating the composition. Hiroshige produced several distinct Tokaido series across his career; this edition is distinguished by its treatment of title inscriptions and a simplified compositional approach that places it close in spirit to earlier Tokaido print traditions. The interplay of mist, mountain form, and early light is handled with characteristic bokashi subtlety.
