- Medium:

From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei, 1856–1858), this [oban](/glossary/oban)-format [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) depicts Naito Shinjuku, a post town established along the Koshu Kaido road at Yotsuya on the western edge of Edo. The composition likely looks down the broad commercial thoroughfare of Shinjuku-machi, which served as the first official station along the Koshu Kaido for travelers departing Edo toward the interior of Honshu. Hiroshige characteristically renders depth through a low horizon and a receding road flanked by shops and lodging establishments. Travelers on horseback or in sedge hats typical of post-town life may animate the middle ground. The surrounding hills of Musashino or the distant Tama range may anchor the far background, situating this commercial thoroughfare within its broader geographic context. Published by Uoya Eikichi, the print belongs to the final and most celebrated major series of Hiroshige's career, completed the year of his death in 1858.
