From Hiroshige's Hoeido Tokaido (1833–34), considered his greatest achievement and among the finest landscape print series in Japanese art. The Hoeido edition is worth many times more than Hiroshige's later Tokaido series. Early impressions show the distinctive crisp bokashi gradation that later wears away.

Description

Station 31 on the Tokaido, Maisaka sits at the western end of Lake Hamana, where the lagoon connects to the sea at Imagire. Travelers crossed this tidal inlet by ferry rather than bridge, and Hiroshige's print shows the boats threading through choppy waters with Mount Fuji sometimes visible in the distance. The crossing was one of the most memorable passages on the entire Tokaido highway.
