This oban nishiki-e from the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" depicts the Oumayagashi (御厩河岸), a riverbank landing on the western shore of the Sumida River adjacent to the shogunate's horse stables (oumaya) in the Asakusa district. The landing served as a transshipment point for goods arriving by river, and the area was characterized by the commercial activity of loading and unloading at the Sumida waterfront. Hiroshige's composition may adopt an elevated viewpoint looking along the river, showing ferry and cargo boats at the near bank with the flat landscape of Honjo visible across the wide water. The oban tate-e format would accommodate a strong vertical recession from the near bank into the middle distance. Blue and grey tones dominate Hiroshige's Sumida River views in this series, with careful parallel-line rendering of the water surface and pale bokashi sky. The composition contrasts the activity of the landing—figures, boats, rigging—against the calm horizontal expanse of the river.
