Description

A dark horse pulls a wooden two-wheeled cart between tall stacks of bundled green bamboo or reeds, with a figure in a round hat seated on the cart bed. Through a gap in the stacked bamboo, a river or bay is visible with a distant shoreline of low buildings beneath a blue sky and white clouds. The palette is dominated by yellow-green bamboo, ochre ground, and blue water, with the horse in dark brown and touches of red on its harness.

Kawase Hasui, "Komagata Embankment," 1919. Woodblock print, ink and color on paper.
