Description
Issued in 1860 to mark the sixth anniversary of the death of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, this Utagawa Kunisada print belongs to the diptych "Visions of Mementos in Double Mirrors (Awase Kagami Katami no Omokage)," a sustained meditation in Edo ukiyo-e on the kabuki line that Kunisada had drawn for nearly half a century. Danjuro VIII had been the brightest matinee idol of his generation, beloved for his striking looks and graceful playing, and his 1854 suicide in Osaka had stunned the theater world. Memorial sheets and anniversary prints continued to appear for years, and Kunisada was a principal designer of them. In this composition, the lost actor is conjured through a portrait-within-a-portrait, his image hovering as if reflected in a mirror or shimmering on the surface of memory while a survivor (often a relative or an actor associated with his major roles) contemplates the apparition. The diptych format allowed Kunisada to play with mirroring and pairing across two sheets, an apt visual device for a series whose title itself foregrounded the doubling of likenesses. The print's cartouches, with poetic verses and inscriptions, function both as devotional elements and as commercial features that helped distinguish the sheet on the bookstall. Such anniversary memorials sit at the intersection of yakusha-e, devotional print, and fan culture, and the Art Institute of Chicago's impression is an important resource for studying how the Edo ukiyo-e trade ritualized and commercialized the memory of its stars.
