Description
"Mountain Landscape in the Mist (Muchu no sansui)" is a color woodblock print of about 1830-1844 by Utagawa Kunisada, held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The title, which can be rendered as "mountains and waters in the mist" or more freely as "landscape in a dream" (muchu can carry the sense of dreaming or trance), signals a poetic, contemplative landscape subject distinct from the figural and theatrical work for which Kunisada is best known. While Kunisada is not primarily associated with pure landscape, like all major Utagawa-school designers he produced occasional pure-landscape prints, especially in the 1830s when the genre flourished under Hokusai and Hiroshige. A muchu landscape would typically combine softly graduated color (bokashi), atmospheric perspective, distant mountains and water elements, and an overall lyrical quality drawing on classical Chinese ink painting (sansui-ga) traditions. The print may be part of an untitled series of landscapes or a single-sheet design. The wide dating range of about 1830-1844 brackets the period before Kunisada's adoption of the Toyokuni III name in 1844 and reflects scholarly uncertainty about its exact production date. The Art Institute of Chicago's holding preserves a valuable example of Kunisada's less-common landscape work and a useful counterpoint to his vast yakusha-e output. The print expands the standard understanding of his stylistic range and his participation in the broader ukiyo-e landscape movement.
