Niki Naonori, Iwate no tsutsuji (Niki Naonori, Azalea) / Tosei mitate sanju-rokkasen 當盛見立 三十六花撰 (Contemporary Kabuki Actors Likened to Thirty-Six Flowers (Immortals of Poetry))

Niki Naonori, the scheming retainer whose plot to seize the Date house drives the Meiboku Sendai hagi cycle on the kabuki stage, is the role at the centre of this design. Utagawa Kunisada places him in his late series Tosei mitate sanju-rokkasen, where thirty-six contemporary kabuki actors in noted roles are paired with thirty-six flowers in a sly parallel to the classical Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry. Niki Naonori is matched with the iwate tsutsuji, the rock-azalea associated with the rocky inland regions of northern Honshu, a flower whose hardy persistence on bare stone became a metaphor for stubborn ambition. The pairing works in two directions: it signals Naonori's iron determination and quietly places the famous Date family drama in a northern landscape. Kunisada uses the standard format of the series, a single large figure in patterned robes, an inset cartouche with flower and poem, and dense brocade textiles in the manner that defined his mature yakusha-e and the wider field of Edo ukiyo-e in the mid-nineteenth century.
