Onoe meshitsukai Ohatsu, Okuniwa no yamabuki (Onoe Servant Ohatsu, Japanese Rose) / Tosei mitate sanju-rokkasen 當盛見立 三十六花撰 (Contemporary Kabuki Actors Likened to Thirty-Six Flowers (Immortals of Poetry))

This print belongs to the late series Tosei mitate sanju-rokkasen, a designer-imagined gathering in which Utagawa Kunisada paired thirty-six leading roles from the contemporary kabuki stage with thirty-six flowers, riffing on the classical convention of the Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry. The figure here is Ohatsu, the loyal servant attached to the household of Onoe, a role from the late-eighteenth-century domestic drama Kagamiyama kokyo no nishikie. The flower assigned to her is yamabuki, the Japanese rose, whose tumbling yellow blossoms had been emblems of feminine resolve and pathos in Japanese poetry since the Heian period. Kunisada uses the pairing as a coded portrait: Ohatsu's stubborn courage on behalf of her wronged mistress is mirrored in the yamabuki's reputation for spilling color even on the most modest banks. The composition shows the actor in role at three-quarter length, with a small inset cartouche framing the flower and its poetic associations. Issued in Edo, the sheet is a textbook example of the mature yakusha-e Kunisada produced for an audience that read kabuki plots, classical poetry and seasonal flowers as a single overlapping vocabulary. As a designer who had trained under Utagawa Toyokuni I and inherited the Toyokuni name, Kunisada effectively defined what Edo ukiyo-e of the mid-nineteenth century looked like: dense pattern, full-faced portraiture, and a constant traffic between stage and classical canon.
