Numbered #14 in its original series, this print portrays Katsuenra Genshoshichi, a figure drawn from the Chinese novel Water Margin whose Japanese name translates as the "swift-footed." Kuniyoshi's Suikoden-inspired heroes typically display their supernatural attributes through dramatic pose and symbolic detail — exposed tattoos, unusual weapons, or command of elemental forces. This work belongs to the extensive body of prints through which Kuniyoshi made the Water Margin's cast of 108 outlaws beloved to Edo audiences.
