Suzuki Saemon Shigeyuki aims a pistol in ambush at Oda Nobunaga — an act referencing historical assassination attempts against the great warlord — in a scene from a numbered warrior or chronicle series. The inclusion of a firearm (introduced to Japan in 1543) grounds the subject in the later Sengoku period and adds an anachronistic technological dimension to the conventional scene of martial stealth. Kuniyoshi depicts the tense moment of concealment and aim with the controlled dramatic energy he brought to clandestine martial subjects.
