After his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180, Minamoto no Yoritomo was forced to hide in the mountains with a small band of loyal men while his pursuers searched for him. The loyal Kajiwara Kagetoki diverted the searching Taira troops by claiming the rustling in the hollow tree was merely a bird, saving Yoritomo's life. Kuniyoshi depicts this pivotal moment of concealment and loyal deception, the tension of discovery barely averted captured in the figures' alert stillness.
