This [shikishiban](/glossary/shikishiban) [surimono](/glossary/surimono) from the series "Five Views of Mount Fuji" (c. 1827-29) captures the mountain at the moment of dawn above the Susaki promontory on the eastern edge of Edo Bay. The pre-dawn quiet of the coastal scene — fishing boats on the water, mist lifting from the bay — provides a tranquil frame for the mountain's emergence into early light. Produced in the luxury surimono format with embossed printing and metallic pigments, it was likely commissioned by a poetry circle celebrating the New Year's first sunrise over Fuji.
