This oban from the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Eastern Capital" series (c. 1843) looks upward from beneath the great wooden arch of Shin Ohashi Bridge toward the distant cone of Fuji beyond the Sumida River's farther bank. The bridge's massive timber understructure frames the scene dramatically, a device reminiscent of Hokusai's famous views of Fuji through man-made structures. Kuniyoshi's Fuji-from-Edo series was his direct engagement with the landscape genre at its most commercially and aesthetically significant.
