Hayano Kampei Tsuneyo is one of the forty-seven ronin of the Chushingura narrative, whose story carried particular pathos — his wife unknowingly sold into the pleasure quarter to raise money for the vendetta fund, Kampei died by his own hand in grief before the night attack. Kuniyoshi's portrait of Kampei reflects the melancholy dimension of this loyal retainer's story, his figure bearing the shadow of misfortune even in heroic posture. Among the ronin, Kampei's fate was uniquely tragic in its combination of loyalty and inadvertent dishonor.
