

Hayano Wasuke Tsunenari was another of the forty-seven loyal retainers of the Ako domain who carried out the famous vendetta in 1703. Kuniyoshi produced individual portraits of most of the forty-seven ronin across multiple series, each depicted in samurai equipment with identifying crests and weapons. These portraits served as a visual memorial to the men whose act of loyalty became Japan's most celebrated moral exemplum, their images sought by admirers for household display.
