Description
A second depiction of Nichiren in snow at Tsukahara on Sado Island (c. 1835-36), rendered in nishiki-e polychrome, shows the exiled priest enduring the harsh winter conditions of his enforced residence on the remote island. Compared to earlier treatments of the same subject, this later version likely employs more sophisticated pigment techniques developed in the intervening years. Nichiren's white robes against the snow-laden landscape created a powerful visual emblem of spiritual endurance that Kuniyoshi returned to across the series.
