"Kagamiyama zori-hachi no dan" refers to a famous scene from the kabuki play Kagamiyama Kokyono Nishiki-e, in which a lady-in-waiting named Onoe, humiliated by her superior Iwafuji who strikes her with a sandal (zori), ultimately avenges herself. The "zori-hachi scene" — the sandal-beating humiliation — was among the most celebrated moments in the play's repertoire. Kuniyoshi's rendering captures the charged confrontation between the two women, the sandal's degrading symbolism central to the composition.
