Katsuta Shinemon Taketaka was one of the forty-seven loyal retainers who carried out the Ako vendetta in 1703. His individual portrait, part of Kuniyoshi's extensive Chushingura-related output, would show him in samurai equipment with the clan crest and the weapons associated with his specific role in the night attack. Kuniyoshi's approach to the forty-seven ronin made each man individually memorable rather than treating them as an undifferentiated group of loyal adherents.
