Kurahashi Zensuke Takeyuki was another of the forty-seven ronin who carried out the Chushingura vendetta, his individual portrait part of Kuniyoshi's comprehensive visual treatment of the loyal retainers. Each ronin's portrait offered the chance to individualize what could otherwise become a faceless heroic collective, and Kuniyoshi's approach distinguished each figure through specific armour configuration, personal weapons, and subtle differences in bearing and expression.
