Oribe Yasubei Taketsune was one of the forty-seven ronin who carried out the famous vendetta against Kira Yoshinaka in 1703, and his inclusion in Kuniyoshi's large body of Chushingura-related prints was almost inevitable. Known for exceptional swordsmanship and physical courage, Yasubei is typically depicted in a posture of readiness, his weaponry detailed with the precision Kuniyoshi brought to all armour and equipment depictions. This print belongs to the extensive Edo-period commemoration of the forty-seven ronin as exemplars of loyalty and martial virtue.
