Ro Shungi (Chinese: Lu Junyi), one of the premier heroes of the Water Margin, appears here in the "Elegant Women's Water Margin" surimono series (c. 1828-32) reimagined as a fashionable Edo woman. As the "Jade Unicorn" — one of the 108 heroes' highest-ranking members — Lu Junyi receives a particularly elevated feminine treatment in this mitate, the warrior's aristocratic bearing translated into a woman of the highest social refinement. The metallic pigments and embossed paper of the surimono format give the figure a tactile luxury appropriate to the character's status.
