"Taiheiki eiyu den" (Heroic Tales from the Taiheiki Chronicle) draws on the great 14th-century war chronicle that narrated the turbulent conflicts between the Northern and Southern Courts. Kuniyoshi produced numerous prints from Taiheiki subjects, drawn to its cast of doomed loyalists, brilliant generals, and spectacular last stands. This print, part of his extensive warrior-chronicle output, likely portrays one of the chronicle's celebrated figures in a moment of personal valor or sacrifice.
