Description
This 1861 color woodblock print (nishiki-e) in the standard ōban format, held by the Art Institute of Chicago (accession number 1926.1623), is from Utagawa Yoshitora's series "Eight Views of Yokohama in Musashi Province" (Buyō Yokohama hakkei). Titled "English Watching Descending Geese at Yoshida Bridge" (Yoshida-bashi no rakugan, Igirisujin), the print transposes one of the eight traditional scenic motifs of classical Chinese poetry — descending geese (rakugan) — into the modern setting of the Yokohama foreign settlement, replacing the classical observer with a top-hatted English merchant gazing from the celebrated Yoshida Bridge. The series exemplifies the ingenuity of Bakumatsu-period Yokohama-e, which combined the established Edo print tradition of the "eight views" framework with the new visual content of the treaty-port era. Yoshida Bridge connected Yokohama's foreign settlement with its Japanese commercial district and was a landmark in early Yokohama topography. The print belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's exceptional holdings of Yoshitora's Yokohama-e assembled through the gift of Emily Crane Chadbourne in 1926, and it is a defining example of the genre at its early-1860s peak.
