$1,000–$10,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Yamakawa's limited output and early death at 46 make his prints relatively scarce. Quality bijin-ga command steady prices.
Twilight, printed in April 1928, depicts the transitional moment between day and night through the lens of a female figure enveloped in the fading light. Shuho produced this oban print using ink and color on paper enhanced with both mica and embossing, making it one of his most technically elaborate works. The mica adds a pearlescent shimmer that evokes the quality of light at dusk, while the embossing, or karazuri, creates raised areas that can be felt by touch.
The embossed elements likely include portions of the woman's garments or hair, where the relief adds a three-dimensional quality to surfaces that would otherwise read as flat printed areas. This combination of kirazuri and karazuri places the print in the luxury category of shin-hanga production, where additional printing steps and materials elevated certain designs above standard editions. The April 1928 date positions this work within Shuho's most productive period, when he was producing some of the finest bijin-ga in the shin-hanga movement.
