Trees at Montreuil — a woodblock study of arboreal form in the Pas-de-Calais region where the town of Montreuil-sur-Mer sits atop its dramatic bluff above the Canche valley. The trees of northern France have a distinctive character shaped by Atlantic weather and the agricultural traditions of bocage country: pollarded willows, windswept beeches, and the gnarled forms of ancient hedgerow trees. Urushibara's sensitivity to tree form and structure, developed through Japanese kacho-e traditions, finds productive material in European landscapes.
