Untitled (yoshimune-arai)

An untitled woodblock print attributed to Yoshimune Arai, who maintained an active studio practice from the 1890s through the early decades of the twentieth century. His career overlapped with several of the most significant developments in Japanese printmaking: the decline of traditional ukiyo-e, the rise of the kuchi-e format, the founding of the shin-hanga movement by Watanabe Shozaburo, and the parallel emergence of the sosaku-hanga (creative print) philosophy. Arai remained within the collaborative publisher-driven model throughout, trusting his designs to professional carvers and printers. This untitled print preserves one result of that collaborative process, a tangible record of shared craft expertise.
