Masks (red), Kabuki Masks presents the collection of ceremonial and theatrical masks that had been central to Japanese performing arts from Noh through the folk traditions that informed kabuki's development. The red masks — possibly the fierce red face of the aragoto hero or the fox mask of sacred shrine performance — provided Mori with a subject of concentrated visual power, the mask's exaggerated features and symbolic color carrying the full weight of the traditions they represented. A display or grouping of kabuki masks offered him an opportunity to explore the theatrical visual culture he had documented throughout his career in a more concentrated, formally abstract way.
