Ukimido at Katada, Biwa

The floating hall of Ukimido rises from the waters of Lake Biwa at Katada in this landscape by Yuhan Ito, its small wooden structure seeming to hover above the surface as it has for a thousand years. The Ukimido — literally "floating hall" — is dedicated to Benten, the goddess of beauty and art, and its island setting on Japan's largest lake made it a natural subject for printmakers drawn to water and architecture.
